The Florida Photo

This photo surfaced in my memories this week — Dave and me, somewhere in Florida, looking like two people who had absolutely no idea what they’d just agreed to.

Because that was the weekend. The one where we decided to sell the house in Narrabeen and put everything we had into a move to the Netherlands. And, in the same breath, somehow also decided we’d be moving to Abu Dhabi.

I genuinely cannot tell you what that conversation sounded like. I wish I could — I’d love to know what words we actually used to talk ourselves into selling a house on the other side of the world and relocating twice over, apparently in one sitting. But I don’t remember the conversation. I just remember the feeling. Dave had a plan, and whatever it was, I trusted it completely. I wasn’t weighing pros and cons or asking for a five-year forecast. I was just in — happy to go along for the adventure, wherever it led.

It did get tricky. Of course it did. Selling the house, the actual move, Abu Dhabi, and then the version of events that eventually landed us back in the Netherland — none of it unfolded the way that weekend in Florida probably imagined it would. But looking back at this photo now, on the other side of all of it, I think that’s sort of the point. Tricky was never going to be the thing that stopped us. It never has been.

Funny thing to be reminded of, right as we’re packing up again.
